Why SHOULD anyone try to save family farms? I don’t care who grows my food, as long as it is affordable and safe. The average Alberta farmer earns significantly more than I ever did: $170,000/year. Of course farming is challenging and I respect anyone who works hard, but lots of traditions and jobs have gone by the wayside, or have been devalued. As a musician, I am certainly aware of THAT. What makes farmers any more special than any other Canadian?

The average Amish farm IS NOT just 40 acres. 40 acres wouldn't even feed their horses for a year. Family groups farm large farms, hundreds of acres. Their soil management isn't always great. Wind erosion removing top soil is a big problem. This is due to plowing in the fall, the old way, so the winter freeze/thaw cycles break down the clouds. Then they can just disk and plant in the spring. This video is not accurate in many ways.

You are not going to become a millionaire on any of these crops. Ginseng is a protected plant in the US and only legal to sell in a few states. In those states, you can only sell a few months out of the year, only sell to licensed buyers and only sell a capped amount. Wild ginseng will net the largest profit, but it is extremely hard to find and harvest. Most likely you would grow your own in the woods. Besides the difficulty and time involved, cultivated ginseng is much less profitable than wild ginseng. Not really worth your time IMO.

I think goats are the most profitable because some breeds like nigora goat are small up to a human knee but still produce 2-3 litre milk as well as fibre and they need less food and space, so you can sell thier: Meat, Milk Cheese, Butter, Yogurt, Casien paint, Fiber, Horn crafts, Leather, Cosmetics, Shampoo, Soap, Lotion Ghee(a type of cooking oil made by heating butter). You can also rent them for land management and as pack and cart animals.
